Microeconomics: The Concept of Utility

In this session, students will be introduced to a principle which underpins all microeconomics: utility and utility curves, which model value, costs, preferences and so, individual decision making. The session will teach students to understand how, given a set of prices and an individual’s preferences, economists can derive the choices an individual will make to maximise their wellbeing. The session will finish with a chance for students to reflect on this model, considering the assumptions it makes and any shortcomings it may have.

Behavioural Economics and Game Theory

Economics’ newest and fastest growing field, behavioural economics sits at the cutting edge of modern economic thinking. Students will be introduced to game theory, which sits at the intersection of maths, logic and economics, studying the strategic interaction between rational decision makers. They will use these games to think about why the predictions of these models are often not followed in the real world. In doing this, students will be introduced to concepts such as heuristics and anchoring.

Econometrics: Analysing Economic Phenomena

This session will be dedicated to econometrics, a critical discipline that involves the application of statistical methods to analyse economic phenomena. Understanding econometrics is essential for prospective university economics applicants, as it equips them with the tools to rigorously analyse economic data, build models, and draw meaningful conclusions. Participants will delve into fundamental econometric concepts such as regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and model validation.

Gender and Economics

This session will cover key questions such as: How does GDP ignore women? How does behavioural economics relate to gender? What is labour force discrimination? What is feminist economics, and how does it challenge conventional economic modelling? The aim of the session is to develop a richer understanding of what the economy is through a gender-focussed lens.

Environmental Economics

This session will cover questions such as: How do we value nature and the climate? How do we green the financial system? In what way does conventional economics fail to cope with the environmental crisis we are currently facing? Is infinite growth on a finite planet something we should be aiming for? Discuss in a lively, interactive session.

Applied Economics

In this session, we will look at how economics is applied across disciplines. We will use skills built in previous sessions to create our own model of why people commit crimes. In turn we will use this to consider what a fair cost of breach clause may be in a contract, to avoid it being struck out as a penalty. This will allow students to widen their economic thinking and show how the concepts we have learned need not only be consigned to academia.
