Minds Underground's Medicine Summer School offers Year 12 students a unique chance to explore the world of medicine under the tutelage of our Oxbridge medics.
Running from July to August, students will immerse themselves in the dynamic and ever-evolving field of Medicine, gaining exposure to the latest medical developments, honing their scientific problem-solving abilities, and crafting compelling ideas for personal statements and interviews. Our weekly online group summer course classes, led by two Oxbridge-educated Medics—one from Cambridge and one from Oxford Medicine—will provide an invaluable platform for students to delve into thought-provoking topics.
Past sessions have explored areas such as medical ethics, socioeconomic determinants of health, antibiotic resistance, the role of technology in modern medicine, scientific research methodologies, and the intricacies of the human brain. In this session we will be discussing the difference between bacterial and viral infections, and how our body combats pathogens. We will also discuss the importance of vaccinations, and how a single pathogen can cause a pandemic. This knowledge will position you to admissions teams as a prospective medical student equipped with essential insights into the prevention and management of diseases, a fundamental aspect of medical practice.

Dissecting the Brain
This session will provide an introduction to neuroanatomy (macro – lobes, general functions; micro – synapses, learning, etc), neurological diseases (eg: Alzheimer’s) and their biological underpinnings, novel treatments and areas of active research, as well as discussion surrounding strokes and connecting signs seen in a stroke with anatomy. This session will provide an introduction to global and public health, with a look at the bidirectional relations between education, employment, food + housing security, early childhood development, and health. As an example of public health threats, we will also discuss antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics are a vital part of clinical care; however, we are increasingly seeing infectious diseases that are resistant to our current antibiotics. Organ Donation and Transplant Medicine - How To Save a Life (Or 9)
In this session we will discuss the conditions that can lead to patients requiring a transplant, solid organ vs haematological transplants, the ‘science’ behind organ transplants (introduction to immune system and mechanisms for immunosuppression), and discussion on the process of getting listed for transplant, ethics/ legislation in UK and its constituents (England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland) vs other countries. Gain a profound understanding of life-saving procedures, showcasing your commitment to the field of Medicine on your university application.

Mostin is a 5th year Trinity College medic at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine with a keen interest in cystic fibrosis and respiratory medicine.
