A Taster of Biology Summer Course Topics
Creating a Human: Stem Cells and Cellular Differentiation
What are stem cells? What do they do? Where are they found? What is multipotency, pluripotency and totipotency? How do embryonic stem cells differ from adult stem cells in their potencies and biological roles? How are there 200 different specialised cell types in the human body harbouring the same DNA? This masterclass provides advanced solutions to all of these questions. The class also explores stem cell research breakthroughs such as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for stem cell therapy and personalised medicine, and organoids for organ replacement and drug testing.
Fighting Against Ourselves: Genetic Diseases, Autoimmune Diseases & Cancer
Non communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of human death worldwide. This masterclass will provide sophisticated details on NCDs, namely genetic and autoimmune diseases, delving into case studies for both. Furthermore, the class will provide an advanced introduction to cancer, discussing key examples of etiological mutations, and debating whether cancer should be considered a genetic disease (or an epigenetic disease).
Evo-devo: How Development Informs Evolution
From the fusion of two gametes to the birth of a new-born, the process of development is equal parts complex and fascinating. Each step is carefully controlled by a set of genes known as the ‘developmental genetic toolkit’. But did you know that the gene controlling eye development (pax6) is the same in a fly as in a human? In fact, many of these developmental genes are used for the same purpose in all animals. This class will explore developmental mechanisms that are conserved across all animals and question what these can tell us about evolution.
Animal Behaviour: Collective & Social
The study of ethology seeks to explain all animal behaviours through two lenses. First, how do they work? Second, why do they exist? The students will use these lenses to look into two types of behaviour: collective behaviour and social behaviour. How can we explain the phenomenon of swarms, shoals and group decision making? Why would one individual help another for no benefit to themselves? This class will explore how complex behavioural interactions work and question why they evolved.
Conservation Biology and Restoration
According to recent analysis, we are in the 6th global mass extinction and it’s accelerating. More than 500 species of land animals are on the brink of extinction and likely to be lost within 20 years. This acceleration is due to human activity and with the recent reported failures at the international climate change conference COP27, the need to make a change is clear. This class will explore the need for conservation and encourage discussion on how we can tackle the current issues our living world is facing.
Tackling Key Biological Questions
This will be a highly interactive session tackling a range of key questions in Biology, particularly useful for those with prospective Oxbridge interviews. The session will cover examples of commonly asked interview questions (and answers!), and strategies for answering difficult questions across a variety of formats. e.g. graph interpretation questions, theoretical/ abstract questions, scientific problem solving…
