A Taster of Chemistry Summer Course Topics
Why Are Transition Metals Colourful?
This class on Transition Metals and Crystal Field Theory will explore crystal field theory, a qualitative theory to explain bonding in metals. We will explore the limitations and improvements to this theory. We will explore explanations including atomic & molecular orbitals, orbital shapes, energies, crystal field splitting, ligand effects.
How Do Chemists Make the Impossible Happen? (Catalysis)
This class will explore catalysis and how chemists are able to manipulate reactions to allow the unfavourable to occur. We will look at what defines a catalyst, how a catalyst can help provide intermediates to make unfavourable reactions happen. The class will also explore three main areas of catalysis, transition metal catalysis, organocatalysis, and biocatalysis.
Molecular Orbital Theory, Hybridisation & Organic Mechanisms
This class will introduce molecular orbital theory, experimental evidence that supports molecular structure with examples of diatomic molecules. We will introduce the concept of hybridisation and understand how to qualitatively explain bonding in simple organic molecules. We will discuss simple mechanisms in organic chemistry described by curly arrows, and the factors that influence the reactivity of organic molecules.
What is Entropy?
Entropy is a buzzword often heard but rarely understood. We'll try and get an idea of what entropy is trying to quantify, what we can use entropy to predict, and how it affects chemical equations. We'll look at some of the laws of Thermodynamics and discuss what they mean, and how they influence not only Chemistry, but the natural processes that allow life to flourish.
Periodic Trends
The periodic table is a database you will find in every chemistry laboratory around the world. It describes every element known in the universe by name, atomic number and mass number. Understanding the relationship between the elements of the periodic table and the trends exhibited is incredibly important and useful. We will discuss some of these trends and begin to understand why the periodic table is constructed in the way it has been.
Tackling Key Chemistry Questions
This will be a highly interactive session tackling a range of key questions in Chemistry, particularly useful for those with prospective Oxbridge interviews. The session will cover examples of commonly asked interview questions (and answers!), and strategies for answering difficult questions across a variety of formats.
Learn From Inspiring Chemistry Tutors From Oxford and Cambridge
Example Oxford Chemistry Tutor: Andrew
Andrew read Chemistry (integrated Master’s degree) at Christ Church College, University of Oxford. Andrew was a Vincent's William S. Broadbent Jnr. Scholar at Oxford and also the recipient of the Bostock Prize, issued by Christ Church College, for results of examinations, on the recommendation of Tutors and the Governing Body of Christ Church. Andrew enjoys teaching students beyond the realms of the curriculum, bridging the gap between school and university for future application success.
Example Cambridge Chemistry Tutor: Bo
Bo is currently in his fourth (Master's) year at Jesus College, University of Cambridge, where he is pursuing an MSci in Natural Sciences specialising in Chemistry. He previously achieved a Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge. Bo's research project focuses on the chemistry of the atmosphere, with his main area of interest being physical chemistry. Bo has significant experience as a tutor and university application mentor. He also serves on the consultative committee of the Cambridge Chemistry Department, advising on the quality of teaching.
