Classics Essay Competition
The Minds Underground™ Classics Essay Competition is aimed at students in Year 12 (though younger applicants are welcome as well as Year 13 university re-applicants). The competition provides students with an opportunity to engage in university-level research, hone their writing & argumentative skills and prepare for university interviews. Entrants must choose 1 question to answer.
Submission Deadline: 3rd March 2025.

Hint: Explore parallels between ancient Greek or Roman politics and modern democracies or autocracies, considering leadership, citizenship, and governance.

How does the portrayal of myth in ancient literature influence modern storytelling?
Hint: Examine how classical myths from authors like Homer or Ovid are reinterpreted in contemporary novels, films, or even video games.

Is it fair to judge ancient societies by modern ethical standards?
Hint: Consider how ancient practices such as slavery, warfare, and gender roles compare with contemporary values, and how historians approach this question.

Entries must be submitted by 11pm UK time on March 3, 2025.
Who can enter the Modern Languages Essay Competition?
Open to all UK and international students! It’s particularly recommended for Year 12 students or gap-year students reapplying to university, though younger students are also welcome.

Only one entry per subject category, but you’re welcome to enter an essay in another category!
