A Taster of Maths Summer School Topics
How to Make a Credit Card and How to Crack Them?
This session will focus on an introduction to number theory and moduli arithmetic. We will learn how to calculate using this and the theorems/ proofs behind this great topic in pure mathematics. This topic is the premise behind how credit cards work and how codes can be written and cracked throughout history. By delving into the theorems and proofs that underpin this pure maths topic, you'll not only strengthen your mathematical foundation but also gain insights into real-world applications, such as understanding the mechanics behind credit cards and historical codebreaking techniques.
How Did Covid Spread?
This session will focus on differential equations and how we can use assumptions to model and prevent epidemic spreading in the future. We will also focus on how differential equations govern other parts of the natural and animal world. By delving into differential equations and their role in modelling and preventing epidemics, you'll not only gain vital mathematical skills but also demonstrate your capacity to apply mathematics to complex, globally relevant issues. This experience will enrich your university application for mathematics, highlighting your commitment to using mathematics for practical problem-solving and innovation.
Vectors and the Physics of the Natural World
This applied mathematics topic focusses on developing vector/ matrix calculus and how this governs the maths around the physics we see and use. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors, combined with the intro of complex numbers in this sense is an important topic throughout all of applied mathematics for further study. This hands-on experience will enrich your university application for mathematics, showcasing your dedication to unravelling the mathematical mysteries of the physical world.
Triangles are Everywhere: Euclidean Geometry
Have you ever tried to fit a circle inside a triangle? How about a triangle inside a circle? In this session we learn about how all shapes are intrinsically linked, specifically focusing on the two most important ones, triangles and circles. Discover what relates angle bisectors, altitudes and medians, and how to solve abstract geometric proofs that are rarely even touched upon in schools.
The Magic of Pascal’s Triangle & Counting
The term “counting” will hopefully already be familiar to you, but this session will give the word a whole new meaning. Tricky puzzles will be answered, centred around counting rearrangements, possibilities and life choices. Pascal’s triangle will reveal itself to be simple and yet incredibly useful in our calculations. You will also explore practical applications of these insights, exploring how these concepts relate to cybersecurity and programming. This experience aims to enhance your university application for mathematics, showcasing your problem-solving abilities and readiness to tackle complex mathematical challenges.
Fermat’s Little Theorem and Number Theory
Fermat’s Last Theorem takes all the attention away from the underrated Little Theorem; it is small and mighty. Students will delve into the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic, and answer questions about primes that they had probably previously taken for granted. As well as exploring modular arithmetic, most commonly seen on our clocks, we will look into famous inequalities, such as AM-GM, and their uses.
