Is Ageing a Brain Disease?

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s are becoming more prevalent in the developed world, with NDDs being the leading cause of death in the UK in 2022. This trend is expected to rise as populations age, and these diseases present unique biological and psychological challenges for families, researchers and care services. But could these diseases be seen as a normal part of ageing? In this class, we will dive into the neurobiology of Parkinson’s disease and ageing, how they affect the brain and the implications of a pathological view of ageing.

Psychonomics: Predicting Human Behaviour

The economy is always a hot topic of debate in the news, and the financial services industry remains one of the UK’s most important industries in the modern world. Everything from understanding how markets move, inflation and interest rates rise and fall, and even which stock will be the next hot pick for a hedge fund, come down to the fickle game of predicting human behaviour. This class will look at the study of decision making and how it contributes to the multidisciplinary field of behavioural economics.

Statistics Are Boring, Right?

For many psychology students, statistics is the most dreaded part of their week. As a compulsory component of BPS accredited degrees, it tends to be a cruel necessity and a break from the interesting stuff. But is there more to stats than just t tests and chi squares? This class will aim at helping students see the big picture of statistics, and how it can be one of the most valuable skills a psychology degree has to offer.

Rethinking Addiction

The idea of addiction as a behavioural concept has become more and more accepted in recent years, with talk of substance addictions replaced by social media addiction, however addictions are still often thought of as a “vice”. But is this really the case, and if so why is it so hard to just stop? In this class we will look at the neurochemical mechanisms of addiction, how substances can affect these processes and the prevailing theories on addiction in the literature.

Correlation vs Cause - Taking a Closer Look at the Research

Does ice cream cause murders? Does eating chocolate mean you’re more likely to win a Nobel Peace prize? Does failing to change into pyjamas give you a headache? Researchers want to make their research exciting – which sometimes leads to some whacky conclusions. In this seminar, we’ll start by learning one of the most important research skills out there- differentiating between a correlation and a cause. In the second half of the class, you’ll test out your new skills on some recent research papers.

Tackling Key Psychology Questions

This will be a highly interactive session tackling a range of key questions in Psychology, particularly useful for those with prospective Oxbridge interviews. The session will cover examples of commonly asked interview questions (and answers!), and strategies for answering difficult questions across a variety of formats. e.g. graph interpretation questions, critical appraisal of research articles, theoretical/ abstract questions, scientific problem solving…
