The course involves a weekly class, over an 8 week period:
Sessions 1-4 (1.5 hours each) will be applicable to all language and linguistics students (linguistics students can join just the initial 4 sessions) - Sessions will focus on the nature of language itself, developing literary awareness, linguistic, & analytical skills. For example, sessions may be centred on questions that frequently come up at interview, such as ‘What is the difference between a language and a dialect?’, ‘What can we learn about a country from its literature?, ‘Is there a medium that ‘speaks out’ the most?’, ‘ Why did humans evolve language?’, ‘Is literary analysis just a case of breaking linguistic conventions on purpose?’, ‘Does vocabulary / grammar affect thought?’
Sessions 5, 6 & 7 (1 hour each): These are language specific sessions in Spanish, French and German. Students can choose to attend sessions in 1 or 2 languages (e.g. if you are applying to study French and Spanish, then we recommend attending the masterclasses for both languages). Please select the languages you would like to take part in at check-out
Session 8 (1.5 hours): This session is applicable to all students, and involves discussing how to utilise the material learnt in the summer school when it comes to applications: i.e. how to use it for cutting-edge personal statement content, and impressive talking points at interview. We will also cover how to prepare for interviews, including going through motivational questions that you can begin to brainstorm answers to.
