A New Political History? Perception and Memory in British Historical Writing

from £78.00

This will consider whether new approaches to the study of contemporaries' perception of events, combined with the historical theory of collective memory, are useful, and how, in thinking about the past. It will also consider the extent to which this has redefined the field of political history, particularly in relation to the ‘linguistic turn’. For this latter element, you will touch on changes in the discipline of political history over the last 50 years or so, introducing the importance of questions of class, race and gender as important parts of political history too.

This session would primarily draw on examples from common A-level areas of study, including US Civil Rights, the French Revolution, Tudor and Stuart Britain, and the Global 20th Century. It can however be adapted for particular topics.
