Debate: History & Formal Structure of Debating
Trace the path from the orators of Ancient Greece and Rome to the rise of Parliament in Medieval England, the creation of debating societies in the Enlightenment period, inspiring speakers such as Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King and modern Parliamentary and Senatorial debates. Students will gain an understanding of the significance of debate and the power it has held over the centuries and in the present day. The formal structure of a debate will also be explained to students and they will practise speaking with balloon debates.
Host: Debate hosts include the Manager of the England Debate Team, a former debate coach from Winchester & St. Paul's Girls School, a subject expert from BBC's televised debate show, "The Big Questions", debate co-ordinators from Oxford and Cambridge's famous Debating Unions, as well as National and International Debate Competition winners.
Suitability: This masterclass is suitable for beginner - advanced debaters. Intermediate - advanced debaters will skip the structure of debate introduction and spend more time on analysis of key past speakers.
Duration: This session could be a single 1-1.5hr session or multiple sessions, depending on the level of depth desired by the student and their debate level.
